Vertical Divider

Developing an innovative product or business is a risky endeavor. It involves a high degree of uncertainty. One common pitfall is to combine too many fronts in one go. You create artificial dependency so that all parts have to be completed before the development stage is ready. Coupling too much scope significantly increases uncertainty, lengthens the time, and reduces the chance of success.
Nespresso first developed a machine and coffee capsules that produce high-quality espresso before adding the milk frothing capabilities to create a latte or cappuccino. Apple introduced the iPod two years before launching iTunes. Amazon's first years were all about buying books online before turning into the everything store. In an interview, Elon Musk explained the importance of decoupling in the R&D journey: “When you are in high-speed R&D, you often want to decouple the problems. You’re trying to solve electrical issues in the battery, and you’re trying to solve structural issues, and if you bring them together, you are putting the whole company at risk.” There are many things that should be done to make your innovation even better and greater. But trying to couple it all in one go is a recipe for failure. Knowing when to decouple is essential to manage uncertainty & complexity. |
